Science and the aquarium in Newport
Newport is a center for ocean science and education. Two institutions anchor that.
Oregon Coast Aquarium
The Oregon Coast Aquarium is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit at 2820 S.E. Ferry Slip Road. Its site says it opened in 1992 and describes itself as an advocate for the health of the ocean, with education programs, animal rehabilitation and environmental stewardship. It says it is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and lists about 15,000 animals across roughly 300 species, including a seabird aviary and otter and pinniped habitats.
Hatfield Marine Science Center
The Hatfield Marine Science Center is operated by Oregon State University at 2030 S.E. Marine Science Drive. Its site describes it as a coastal research hub since 1965, serving as a research base for six state and federal agencies and hosting OSU's Marine Operations, which supports research vessels and marine technology. It also has a visitor center and offers student research and instruction. Check the center's site for current visitor hours.
